The next generation seems to be in a worse position than our current generation and no one is doing a thing to stop it. All of the Hollywood stars on television get praised for being raging alcoholics or wearing skimpy clothing. If the media is praising these Hollywood screw ups then it is up to the parents of these young children to instill some values into their minds. Television and music have a huge effect on the world’s young population and when you turn either on, all you hear is sex, sex, drugs and more sex. How can we put this to an end? No matter how much we try to shelter our kids, they will eventually be exposed to all of the garbage that this world has to offer. We want to protect our kids but at the same time we want our kids to have lives, so where does a parent draw the line? There is absolutely no way that the next generation could get better with record companies producing music that degrade woman and glorify guns and drugs or television stations such as BET or MTV showing men and women drinking and having sex or women belittling themselves by prancing on stripper poles. If we want to better the next generation, then the current generation must begin to work for change now not later. We can not have violent movies and disgustingly thin women represent the image of what America is all about because then that will be what America is all about. This land is about Life, Liberty and the pursuit of happiness, and that can not be achieved through drugs,sex and not eating. Those habits will leave our young depressed, hopeless and possibly teenage mothers and fathers. All in all in my opinion the next generation is only going to get worse and its hard to imagine seeing things get more vulgar than they are now. Parents of the future must act now to attempt to put all of this trash to an end and raise a respectable generation.

US Pole Dance Championship 2010

The idea of a woman pole dancing has long been thought of as something dirty. Something that you do behind closed doors. This idea is rapidly changing. Pole dancing is starting to become a liberating exercise across much of North America. The pole is something that is moving from the strip clubs to the gyms and to the homes of families. This type of exercise does not discriminate against any body-type or against any background. Anybody can do it, as long as they are able to rap their minds around the fact that it is not dirty or degrading. It’s actually fun.

I recently finished the first level at a local studio. I went with a couple of my friends. We had been batting around the idea for quite a while because of the sexual connotations behind it. I started the process and we went and did it.

We walked into the first class not knowing what to expect. The atmosphere was inviting, even though the walls were covered in mirrors. There was a positive energy in the studio. Everybody was smiling and having a good time. Then a women in knee high “hooker” boots hung upside down from the pole, using just her ankles for support. Wow. I want to be able to do that.

Then class actually started. The first move you learn is how to do a hip circle. (Kick your hip out to the right, swing around back while breathing in, move left to right across the front while breathing out, repeat slowly.) The next thing that needs to happen is for your hands to wonder on your own body. This was the weirdest part. Society says that we shouldn’t touch ourselves like that. It felt so awkward. After 6 weeks, it felt perfectly natural. You would be amazed at what this one move can do for your self confidence.

Then there are variations on push-ups, all meant to work different muscles in your upper body. Ab work. Leg work. A lot of stretching. After 6 weeks, I have muscle definition, some stamina, and I can easily reach my own toes.

Then comes the pole. You can just dance, using the pole as a prop (something to lean on or rest your hand on) or to do spins. Everybody wants to do spins but learning to dance around it is half the challenge as well. It building grace and body awareness. Without these factors, the spins would be impossible.

After our last class was finished at the end of November, I was so sad that I was going to have to wait till the beginning of January before I could start the next level. But I’m looking forward to it and can’t wait. By level 3 I get to get my own pair of “hooker” boots.

Every women should try pole dancing. It’s fun. It’s liberating. You can do it at any age and at any shape. You’ll be impressed by how much you loose, how much you tone your muscles, and how much you increase your flexibility. You will also be surprised at how addictive it is. Plus, you can always use it as a secret weapon against the men in your life. Pull out a few moves and he’ll just about beg to do the chores.

Many nights I dream I am dancing. Sometimes there is an audience, sometimes there is a stage but always, always there is ultimate freedom. I leap without the hindrance of gravity and spin with the balance of Baryshnikov. Once out of my slumber my gracefulness takes a dramatic stumble, however the sense of exhilaration and inhibition when I dance while awake is no more subdued than when asleep. The music pulses into my body filling my veins, my muscles, my soul and it pours back out through my movements. No longer does it matter that my boss irritated me today, that bills are waiting to be paid, that life is pounding on my door demanding attention like a spoiled child. All gone are the world’s imperfections and my imperfections and in place there is complete peace. I move with no plan, no agenda yet every step is there for me placing me in harmony with the earth beneath me and the air around me. Placing me finally in harmony with myself even if only for a short while.

Now by this point you might be thinking me a “hippie” type what with all the earth and air talkhowever I must challenge you on this. Do you remember rocking out to Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody” with your buddies in the car? Show me someone who didn’t feel unbridled excitement while head-banging to the last guitar solo and I’ll show you someone who’s never heard of Queen. How about at your cousin’s wedding when “that song” starts to play and everyone screams and runs to the dance floor. Tell me there isn’t sheer happiness as you flail about grinning ear to ear. You are connected with the moment, with yourself and with those around you.

Dancing, while present all around us in many forms and places, I do not believe gets its just dues when it comes to mental well being. We’ve got the physical covered – barring taking up residence in a third world country you can find a Jazzercise class almost anywhere. You can “Sweat to the Oldies” or you can prepare for a career in pole-dancing with Carmen Electra. Yep, we’ve got the physical covered…check, check and check. But what about stress-relief? Anger management? Depression? Granted most of us are not at liberty to just bust a move when tensions at the office get high. Chances are that might lead you to much bigger problems than what you started with. But how about an outlet for negative energy on a regular basis that keeps the stress, the anger, the depression from building up in the first place?

Themed Rooms at The Palms, Las Vegas

Pony up $25,000 a night and you can stay at the Basketball-themed Hardwood Suite which features three “NBA sized” Murphy beds, a basketball court with your name written on the court itself, NBA-quality locker room with personalized jerseys for everybody in your group. Some notable celebrities that have stayed in this room include wrestler Hulk Hogan, Carmen Electra, Chris Webber and Dennis Rodman.

Basketball not your thing? Perhaps you would like to check out one of the many other unique suites such as the G-Suite which takes its design cues from the Palm’s Ghost Bar, a nightclub on the 55th floor with views of the pool below through a special glass floor. The suite features a similar glass floor along with a live television feed of the action below, available for between $3,000 to $5,000 a night.

Other high-end suites include the Sky Villas with up to 9,000 square feet each with their own indoor-outdoor swimming pools that actually overhang the side of the building and have a glass end wall for maximum viewing, and the Erotica Suite which features a round rotating bed and obligatory stripper pole. I’m surprised none of the suites feature a champaign glass shaped Jacuzzi!

The Palms Hotel has been catering to celebrities since it first opened in late 2001. In 2002, it was the resort where participants of MTV’s The Real World: Las Vegas stayed, and the hotel features its own world class recording studio where artists like Lil’ Jon, The Killers, Michael Buble, Britney Spears and Vegas favorite Celine Dion can lay down a few tracks before hitting the town. Even if you aren’t a rock star, you can still live out your rock and roll fantasy at the Palms. For an undisclosed fee, somewhere in the tens to hundreds of thousands of dollars, the hotel will arrange a “Music Fantasy” which entails having your favorite band come to the studio and record a song with you.

George Maloof, owner of the Palms Hotel recently described the “Music Fantasy” experience in a recent interview with ABC radio host Al Mancini.

He Said “We will fly a private jet to pick you up wherever in the US and you and 10 of your friends and we put you up here in the suites and you get to record with your favorite artist and eat at the finest restaurants and you stay here for 3 nights and then you get bragging rights with your CD.”

But the Palms’ signature suite is the new Hugh Hefner Sky Villa on the 34th floor of the Fantasy Tower. This amazing suite comes decorated with Playboy artwork selected by Mr. Hefner himself. The outdoor Jacuzzi features the Playboy logo prominently and seats you and 24 of your closest friends.

Other features of this 9,000 square foot room include a glass elevator, steam room, an exercise room, full wet bar, pop-up plasma TV’s, electronically controlled drapes, a fireplace, and poker table, and even its very own private spa. All this for only $40,000 a night.

The Art of Flirting at the Gym

You’re at the end of your third set on the chest press machine, and as you push out that last rep, you notice that the guy across the room with the nicely cut abs and biceps is looking at you in the mirror while he does his bicep curls. He’s hot, for sure, but is he flirting or just another narcissistic muscle head showing off? You move to the next machine and glance over at bicep guy. Yep. he’s definitely checking you out, and he’s the type you go for. Your next move is…

Well, what would you do? Let’s face it, the gym is a hotbed of flirtation and sexual/dating possibilities. Depending on which you’re after, the way you initiate or respond to a flirt at the gym can either make it happen, or make it just go away. Put your best game forward, and step up. Don’t let the opportunity pass you by. You want to get it right, if you’re going to get it….

So, let’s break down the basics. Cover these bases and you’ll be off to a good start!

Try to look and smell nice

Looking nice just means taking a bit of care with your gym attire. Wearing your old ratty T shirt with the holes in it and those stretched out sweatpants that you love is not going to cut it. Step it up and invest in a few, simple yet stylish pieces that have you looking neat, clean and attractive. Nobody wants to be approached by the sweaty, dirty looking guy at the gym.

By the same token, dress appealingly, but don’t overdo it. You never want to look like you’re trying too hard. Ladies, keep it sexy without looking like you just climbed down off a stripper pole, or are on your way to a hot party. Leave a little something to the imagination. The best flirt artists know that as rule #1!

And as for smelling, nice, it’s not that impossible. Just be sure to freshen up a bit if you get a little too sweaty. Carrying or keeping a bottle of lightly scented body spray is a good idea. You can spritz some on mid workout when you go to the bathroom. It will help you feel more confident to know you’re not smelly if you want to try to talk to someone.

Be approachable!

Some of us, when we’re working out get this fierce, warrior, gym face on that could scare away even the wildest animal! Soften it up a bit and smile a little! A smile opens the door and gets people to let their guard down. Now you don’t look so scary to try to talk to! Your warrior’s mask could be keeping you from getting some quality flirt time from someone who thinks you’re a hottie, but they’re scared to even look your way, you’re so fierce when your game face is on.

Don’t be afraid to make the first move

If you see someone that elevates heart rate, stay relaxed. Pick the right moment, position yourself, and initiate some small talk. Be casual, friendly, and don’t drop lines…just be natural. Not sure what to say? Then just ask a simple question.. Something like “how long have you been working out?” is a great conversation starter at the gym. Or “How do you like that machine/exercise? Is it really working for you?”. And you can always ask someone to show you how to use a machine or how to do an exercise you see them doing. Ladies, that one is a no brainer for you. Guys love to be helpful, and guys, that same trick can work for you too. After all, you’re both there for the same purpose; getting fit. There’s no more normal a conversation you can have in this environment. There are a million and one seemingly innocent questions you can ask someone at the gym. This one’s easy. Jump on it!

Be friendly…just not TOO friendly

Be friendly without being annoying. If you’ve started a conversation with someone, and they’re not really responding, abort mission. A flirt is never fun if it’s not being reciprocated. Cut your losses and move on. But when you do have one on the line, and they’re into it, be sure to keep your banter light and friendly without going too in depth about the details of your personal life. The best flirters are great at showing interest in the other person, instead of going on and on about themselves. There’s a subtle art to that. Learn it!

Give a compliment. They do work!

And what better place to do it? Here, in this environment where people are actively doing their best to improve their appearance, everyone wants to know that their hard work is paying off. I find that complimenting a guy on one of his best body parts kicks the door wide open for me. “Wow! You’ve got some nice triceps!” or “Whooo. Nice abs! You must work your abs a lot!”. I have said that to many a guy..and it’s worked. Might sound a bit cheesy, but you know what? I also mean those things when I say them. Like, I wouldn’t say it to a guy that didn’t fit the description! And even the toughest looking guy (or girl) appreciates a good compliment every now and then.

Look at what your person of interest has going for them, and compliment them on it. Now, to be honest, I usually use this as a “hit and run” approach. I compliment, smile, and then just walk away. I don’t linger, trying to open a conversation, unless it just happens naturally. But that little compliment gives me an opening that I can use now any time I see this person at the gym. The next time, I smile, they smile and we exchange hellos. From that point, anything is possible. I no longer have to think on how to get this person’s attention…been there, done that. You don’t always have to get it all in one sitting. Sometimes you gotta just lay the track. Then eventually, you can get that train to run and stop right at your station!

Look for signs that they’re single

Now, before you turn it on, look for signs that they’re single. And if you can’t tell, you can find ways to find out during a conversation. Like, “does your wife/husband work out here too?” That’s a great question, because it not only gets you some pertinent information, but it also let’s the person know (if they just happen to be a little clueless) that you’re kind of interested. Two birds with one stone!

You don’t want to waste your good flirting skills on someone you can’t even have in the first place!

Check for wedding rings, and ring marks on the wedding ring finger (some people take their rings off to work out). You don’t want to make an ass of yourself trying to horn in on someone else’s territory.

In a nutshell, you have to be willing to just throw caution to the wind and go for it. You have to figure out what works for you, what you can pull off given your personality type, and just work it! If coy flirtation is more your speed, be coy. Have a sparkling personality? Get close to that person, find your opening, and sparkle on! The gym is the perfect flirting environment because you have time to assess your target, and make your approach, and unlike a quick sighting of some hottie on the train, bus or sidewalk, not only do you have more time, but you’re already starting out on common ground. Use that to your advantage!

With a little practice and a whole lotta confidence, you’ll be able to flirt at the gym with ease in no time. So, come on, let’s do it! Flex, smile, and go get ‘em, tiger!

What Really Happens in a Pole Dancing Class?
